Celebration of 152nd Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

The Embassy of India in Sao Tome organized the 152nd celebration of the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at its premises on 2nd October, 2021.  Taking recognize of the COVID restrictions imposed in the country, the Embassy downsized the event with participation of 15 persons.

Mahatma Gandhi´s birthday on 2nd October is a National Holiday in India every year. This day is also celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence. Indians widely describe Gandhi as the father of the nation. 

Ambassador Raghu Gururaj welcomed the small gathering. In his remarks, Ambassador talked about the Mahatma Gandhi’s life, ideas and work and how they are of crucial importance to all those who want a better life for humankind. He stated that even though the political map of the world has changed dramatically since Gandhi´s time, the economic scenario has witnessed unleashing of some disturbing forces, and the social set-up has undergone a tremendous change. Gandhi´s ideals continue to remain relevant even in the 21st Century.  Students from the National University of Sao Tome also spoke their views on Mahatma Gandhi.

The Embassy showed a short movie on the life of Mahatma Gandhi. It also organized a photo exhibition which gave a glimpse of Gandhi. As part of the celebrations, students of Sao Tome participated in an essay contest held on the Life and Ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. Ambassador gave away prizes to the top three winners of the essay contest.
